Course purpose

Diving emergencies present circumstances that are not commonly encountered in general first aid. This course prepares responders across every phase of a diving emergency:

  • Understand — before anything goes wrong
  • Prepare — before you are needed
  • Assess and Respond — the first minutes
  • Recognise and Manage — working out what is wrong
  • Coordinate — until they are handed over

Designed for commercial and recreational divers, dive professionals, instructors, divemasters, supervisors, boat crew and operators — anyone who may need to respond to a diving-related casualty.

What the course teaches

  • Recognising and managing decompression illness, including decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
  • Managing barotrauma and other pressure-related diving injuries
  • Responding to drowning and immersion-related incidents
  • Providing oxygen therapy to a diving casualty
  • Advanced resuscitation using airway adjuncts and suction (HLTAID015)
  • First aid for envenomation and injuries from dangerous marine animals
  • Assessing and monitoring a diving casualty until handover
  • Coordinating emergency response, evacuation and contact with diving emergency services
