Course purpose
Diving emergencies present circumstances that are not commonly encountered in general first aid. This course prepares responders across every phase of a diving emergency:
- Understand — before anything goes wrong
- Prepare — before you are needed
- Assess and Respond — the first minutes
- Recognise and Manage — working out what is wrong
- Coordinate — until they are handed over
Designed for commercial and recreational divers, dive professionals, instructors, divemasters, supervisors, boat crew and operators — anyone who may need to respond to a diving-related casualty.
What the course teaches
- Recognising and managing decompression illness, including decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
- Managing barotrauma and other pressure-related diving injuries
- Responding to drowning and immersion-related incidents
- Providing oxygen therapy to a diving casualty
- Advanced resuscitation using airway adjuncts and suction (HLTAID015)
- First aid for envenomation and injuries from dangerous marine animals
- Assessing and monitoring a diving casualty until handover
- Coordinating emergency response, evacuation and contact with diving emergency services
Qualifications issued
On successful completion, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for:
- NAT11448001 — Provide first aid to a compressed gas diving casualty
- HLTAID015 — Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
HLTAID015 is included within the course, providing nationally recognised training in advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy alongside the diving-specific unit of competency.
Prerequisite: Participants must hold a current HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificate.
